The design for Normal People is an exercise in duality, reflecting the stark difference in social status of the two main characters. Light and shadow play and interact, as if illuminating their secret love. Rigid lines and soft shading visually represent the contrasting emotions they feel. Opposing serif and sans-serif fonts speak to the way their differences complement each other and work together, and imagery from nature speaks to the overarching theme of coming of age. This is what relationships are: messy and beautiful, heart wrenching and magical, quiet and spectacular – all at once.
